A snood is a little crocheted cap (also known as a "caul"), that a lady will tuck her hair up in.   Until this century, a married or respectable woman always wore a hair covering when in public, or even anytime she went outside her dressing room.

This is the handiest little accessory I have ever come across.  For those of us who work hard during the day, it is nice to have something attractive to bind our hair up into, to keep it out of our face.
